Research abstract

It has been well established that disease in stored potatoes and many other vegetables and fruits generate a variety of volatile compounds that are released into the storage space Furthermore, specific types of disease produce volatile compounds that generate unique fingerprints on ultra-sensitive spectrographic molecular detection devices. The background atmosphere of commercial storage facilities can contain molecules that interfere with the ability of ultra-sensitive devices to measure organic molecules produced by disease pathogens. An ultra sensitive detector capable of separating background from disease molecules can detect diseases early and thereby reduce damage to the crop. This SBIR project will demonstrate the feasibility of a novel concept for ultra sensitive detection and identification of a broad range of molecular species. This approach will serve as the foundation for a new generation of diagnostic tools for specific and sensitive detection of organic molecules produced by diseases in stored crops. The innovations proposed in this research are aimed at producing low-cost ultra sensitive molecular detection technology that is a versatile, usable, and affordable product designed for wide spread adaptation within the agricultural industry. The significance of this innovation is a cost-performance breakthrough that will enable commercial success for diagnostic products that will reduce the growing disease damage cost.
