Research abstract

Aspen System proposes an innovative technology for correcting the phase of a high power laser beam delivered via a multimode fiberoptic. The proposed system has an architecture lending itself to a broad variety of applications that range from ladars to medical catheters. Keeping the commercial applications in perspective, the laser source and other bulky components are positioned at the back-end of the device. The front-end comprises of merely an out-coupling miniature tip at the end of a multimode fiberoptic. Almost independent of its wavelength, the laser beam from a 10 m long multimode fiberoptic is nearly diffraction limited with over 70% of the original laser energy out-coupled. With the development of a commercial product in mind from inception, in Phase I we shall provide a feasibility study and set up a laboratory system to demonstrate the proof-of-concept. These experiments will lead to the design of a prototype for a 1 J laser delivery system along with a prediction of its performance. Simultaneously, a commercialization plan will be initiated. During Phase II, the prototype system will be assembed and tested, running parallel with the identification of appropriate commercial markets. Phase III will be devoted entirely to the development of a marketable product under commercial sponsorship.
