Research abstract

There is both a commercial and military need to improve the capability to reconnoiter and image targets of interest at long ranges and under adverse seeing conditions. The goal of this effort is to improve a key component needed for such long range imaging, an image sensor array capable of fast frame rates exceeding a million frames per second. The concept that will be pursued in Phase I involves on-chip image processing that draws on recent success in making and demonstrating an image sensor that has achieved one million frame per second operation, tailored for experimental research in fluid cavitation and gas dynamics. The conceptual design will be completed in Phase I. Breadboard tests are also planned using the existing Million frame per second camera.| Benefits: The real-time on-chip image processing envisaged for improving long imaging under adverse seeing conditions will most likely have commercial applications in industry and academic research as well.|
