Research abstract
We propose to develop an environmentally-hardened laser resonator structure and sub-assemblies. They will be tested on a mid-power, diode-pumped, solid-state Nd:YAG laser, and are suitable for many opto-electronic devices. We have experience building laboratory versions of these lasers for scientific applications. We believe it is possible to environmentally harden their structure so that they can be used in a wider range of applications, including military aircraft. The goal of the proposed Phase I project is to investigate new design concepts for laser systems that operate in harsh environments. These concepts affect the structure of the resonator plat- form, its mounting, and the optical mounts. A breadboard test assembly will be subjected to vibration, temperature, and humidity stress tests to the point of failure to determine its ability to maintain alignment of the optics in extreme and rapidly changing environments. During Phase II we propose to incorporate the design into a mid-power, diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser, and perform aircraft instrumentation qualification testing of the laser.
