Research abstract
72699B03-I Next-generation neutron sources, such as the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will require faster-than-ever data collection rates. Unfortunately, the present generation of neutron sample environment equipment (cryostats, furnaces, etc.) lacks the automation features needed to handle the anticipated onslaught of non-expert users, rapid experiments, and frequent sample changes. This project will integrate state-of-the-art cryogenic and automation technologies to produce a Fast Exchange Refrigerator specifically designed for a next-generation neutron user facility. Phase I will conduct thermal and mechanical studies, leading to a detailed engineering design that incorporates standard commercial components whenever possible. A prototype will be constructed and tested. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: The technology not only should find direct applications at neutron scattering facilities, but also could be adapted to serve other applications such as X-ray diffraction and industrial materials handling.
