Research abstract
Multispectral Solutions, Inc. (MSSI) proposes to develop an Ultra WideBand (UWB) Radio Frequency (RF) dynamic positioning system that has no dependency on the Global Positioning System (GPS). UWB refers to a technology that is based on emissions of shortpulses of RF energy. UWB technology permits precision range propagation measurements between transmitters and receivers. Using multiple UWB pseudolites, a geopositioning system can be developed with accuracy equivalent to GPS. In a preliminary UWBgeopositioning study, positioning error of the UWB system was bounded to 4 meters.Under Phase I, two major objectives are proposed. The first objective is to develop the geo-location system architecture and design based upon a systems study of UWB RF ranging technology. The second objective will demonstrate the range measurementperformance of UWB waveform propagation.MSSI's implementation of UWB is unique and permits multiple frequency channels. MSSI's UWB technology allows for UWB devices and other RF systems to occupy the same platform without interference. Multi-channel UWB capability provides jamming resistanceby allowing users to change channels if the current one is jammed. Additionally, UWB waveform energy occupies wide spectral bandwidth offering a low probability of interception and detection (LPI/D) waveform, thereby increasing the positioning system'ssurvivability. Precision positioning systems that can operate independently from GPS are necessary for future threats. MSSI's UWB system is frequency agile and LPI/D which will increase the system's survivability. Commercial applications of a precision positioningsystem include indoor positioning applications such as fire fighter and law inforcement personnel location, monitoring and tracking.
