Research abstract

MR Technologies, Inc. proposes to design, fabricate and bench test a shock and vibration isolation system for selected on-board, rack-mounted avionics systems used in the Navy's E-2C Hawkeye aircraft. The proposed SVI system is based on Magneto-Rheological fluid technology and consists of MR actuators, electronic controller, and sensors. MR-based semi-active suspensions are ideally suited for use in harsh simultaneous vibration and shock environments. Many aerospace SVI applications are anticipated. These include isolation mounts for sensitive electronics/sensor systems, engine mounts, pilot and passenger/crew seating, ejection systems, and landing gear. The focus of the proposed Phase I SBIR work will be to develop a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) SVI laboratory demonstration system suitable for use in the E-2C's operational shock and vibration environment. This proof-of-concept SDOF SVI system will provide the ideal starting point for a Phase II SBIR program. A Phase II program would involve the design, construction, and field testing of a fully functional multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) SVI system for rack-mounted avionics components in operational E-2C aircraft. The proposed Phase I SDOF SVI system will also serve as a feasibility demonstration for use of similar systems in a broad range of related aerospace applications.
