Research abstract
Multimedia packet switching communication networks are now being installed worldwide, including the Internet, ATM, the future information super-highway and wireless cellular networks. The NAVY must have access to these networks while maintaining complete internal communications security. A new lossless data compression technique, based on a new information theory known as the self-learning Autosophy networks, has recently become available. Applications already include disc file compression software, the V.42bis modem standard and lossless graphics image compression. The same methods may be adapted to compress text, audio, graphics or live television. In the new Autosophy information theory "information" is redefined to depend on data "content", such as "novelty" and "movement", only. Everything already known to the receiver is redundant and need not be transmitted. The result is great lossless data compression and a communications method especially suitable for packet switching networks. Additional benefits include: error resistance, a virtually unbreakable "codebook" encryption and complete freedom from hardware parameter, such as image size, resolution or scanning rates in television. A universal packet switching network protocol may be defined for any type of data which would remain valid for any future evolution or improvement in communications hardware. This may greatly improve all NAVY communications.
