Research abstract
Not Available The objective of this Phase I project is to demonstrate the feasibility of building small, piezoelectrically driven motors (piezomotors) that provide mechanically useful rotary drive speed and output torque at high overall efficiencies. The piezomotors proposed here incorporate genuine mechanical interference to transfer motion from electrically and mechanically resonant piezoelectric transducers to the motor output shaft. With appropriate design, the class of piezomotors proposed here can also operate at any speed up to that at which resonant drive is achieved. Feasibility of the motor concept will be demonstrated by simulation and test. Detailed engineering predictions of motor system performance will be made to quantify performance and efficiency of a prototype. Peak overall efficiency of the motor and its drive electronics will be optimized subject to a constraint on minimum power output. Bench-top tests of prototype components will also be conducted to demonstrate and quantify required electronic and mechanical subsystem functionality. Subsequent development of the high-efficiency, high-energy density piezomotors demonstrated under this project will focus on miniaturization of electronic elements and further increasing the energy density of the device.
