Research abstract
Amorphous Matrix Composite samples will be developed and fabricated using Tungsten and Carbon wires as the reinforcements, and the bulk amorphous alloys known as LIQUIDMETALTM as the matrices. Emphasis will be placed on achieving high loading fractions of the reinforcing materials. A process to commercially manufacture will be studied and mapped, and feasibility of the process will be determined. Rods of the Amorphous Maxtrix Composite will then be fabricated using this process. Material characterization experiments to determine the properties will be carried out. Key parameters under investigation include alloy refinement, temperature control sensitivity and finished part porosity. BENEFITS: The results from this study will provide valuable process data for the future development of Amorphous Matrix Composite products, as well as specific product concept feasibility. The product application of Amorphous Metal Composites is well suited to many industries, including sporting goods, biomedical, and anywhere a unique combination of strength and corrosion resistance is needed.
