Research abstract

Deployable Autonomous Distributed System (DADS) is a programestablished by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to demonstratethe ability to conduct effective antisubmarine warfare (ASW) inthe littoral using a field of low-cost autonomous sensors. In a DADS field, individual sensor nodes operate autonomously. Each sensor node uses a set of acoustic and electromagneticsensors to provide coverage of a small area of interest. EachDADS sensor node uses a matched-field tracking algorithm toprovide target detections consisting of position, velocity, andclassification information. Once a field-level detection isconstructed from the field of sensor nodes, it is transferred toa DADS master node, where field-level data fusion is performed. Each autonomous node relies on battery power to be operational.Power is drained from the battery for acoustic processing, acoustic communications, and sensor operation. ORINCON proposesresearch and development of a field-level controller (FLC) thatwill be used by the DADS field to minimize battery powerconsumption while holding the field-level probability ofdetection (Pd) constant. In conjunction with the FLC, ORINCONproposes research and development of a field lay-down algorithm. The field lay-down algorithm will determine the number andlocation of sensors in the field to achieve a desired level ofperformance.
