Research abstract

"It has been demonstrated that the proposed concept of a fuel cell based UPS is a viable alternative to battery, flywheel, or combustion engine based solutions in the multi-kW range. The new UPS system combines completely instantaneous transfer responsewith high reliability and environmental friendliness. It can withstand large power surges for extended periods of time without adverse effects and is not limited by depth-of-discharge, high temperature, or cycle life limitations. A small prototype has beenbuilt and demonstrated to Airforce and UPS industry. In Phase II, two UPS prototypes will be built and independently tested. The fuel cell system will be integrated in existing UPS hardware provided by a leading UPS manufacturer as part of an ongoingcollaboration. Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) and installation and operation costs will be determined. Load power factor and load crest factor abilities will also be measured. A system design for 100+ kW will be established."
