Research abstract
Not Available Integration of information networks on a global scale has helped most enterprise systems and applications improve their efficiency of operation, management and control. However, it has opened new avenues for malicious attacks by adversaries. Information security research efforts have concentrated on devising host, network or system level defensive mechanisms that can either prevent, or detect and eliminate such attacks so that system impacts are minimized. However, a decision tool that considers the cost and performance degradations of defensive mechanisms, and that recognizes resource constraints of both parties, should assist deployment of defensive strategies. Moreover, an effective representation of the defense situation in the face of ongoing and potential assaults and deployed countermeasures will help the security manager to identify the need for improvement of system security. We propose to develop a game theory based software tool that provides an effective representation of the current and expected nature of future security situation of an enterprise system. The proposed system will model a wide range of adversaries and assist in the strategic selection of defense mechanisms to deploy such that the enterprise mission impacts (in terms of resource consumption) are minimized.
