Research abstract

The US navy reuires a highly visible signal cartridge to be used with practive bombs for night training operations that will not initiate bomb range fires or produce other environmental hazards such as chemical toxicity. The US Navy wishes to replace the current technology of the MK4MOD3 High Visibility Signal Cartridge which uses red phosphorus to produce smoke and flame as the visible signal. This proposal presents alternative approach that has the ability of generating a high visibility signal that can be seen for over one mile and is environmentally friendly in that no toxic materials are contained or generated by the signal cartridge and will not initiate bomb range fires. The proposed approach also uses components of the current MK4MOD3 to ensure compatability with existing practice bombs. The specific objective of this Phase I effort is to show feasibility of the concept with an engineering prototype with justification for transitioning into a Phase II program. The approach can be easily modified to be compatible with other military practice ordinary Commercial applications consists of a miniaturized high visible signal marker that can be used by cyclists, joggers, and skiers and for security systems.
