Research abstract

A fly-by-light (FBL) system is proposed for use with vehicle management systems (VMS). These FBL systems offer opportunities in improved safety with immunity to electromagnetic interference, electrical isolation, no cross-talk between cables, greater transmission bandwidth, and greater transmission security. Other benefits include weight savings, reducndancy, better reliability, and potential design simplification. Various modular approaches will be investigated for alternate protocols, topologies and network standars. Of particular interst is the development of highly reliable, low-cost FBL sytems using modular approaches. The applications of nonlinear optical polymer devices to FBL systems will be determined. During the proposed work design factors will be considered in providing a design for a PHase II breadboard. Also, we expect to work closely with Lear Astronics, a world leader in VMS and digital flight controls for the development of the proposed technology.
