Research abstract

Thermophotovoltaic generators work by directly converting heat energy in the form of infrared radiation into electricity using photovoltaic cells. With no moving parts in the conversion process, these direct current generators promise quiet and reliable operation. With their capacity to utilize logistic fuels, they have the potential to meet the military's emerging requirement for portable battery charging units in the field. JX Crystals has developed key components for thermophotovoltaic systems and has performed extensive public demonstrations of its prototypes. The key to the company's approach is the use of low cost infrared-sensitive photovoltaic cells and an emitter matched to these cells. Building on the company's development of propane fired systems for the commerical market, this proposal calls for delivery of a 20 Watt field-ready battery charger operating on propane or butane. In anticipation of phase II requirements, liquid fuel options will be investigated for both 20 Watt and 200 Watt battery chargers. Phase I will include demonstration of a liquid fuel burner for the 20 Watt system. Under a subcontract, the Tecogen division of Thermo Power will draw on its experience with liquid fuel fired thermoelectric generators to design a liquid fuel burner for a 200 Watt thermophotovoltaic system. BENEFITS: JX Crystals is pursuing commercial development of thermophotovoltaic generators for mountain cabins, boats and recreational vehicles, as well as military applications. All of these markets have segments with a strong preference for liquid fuels, which is addressed in this proposal.
