Research abstract

65511 Superconducting magnets are at the heart of the design of many fusion power devices. However, their manufacturing and operation coasts must be reduced significantly to make them competitive options. This project will develop an innovative approach to the design of cable-in-conduit superconductors, leading to a significant reduction in the cost of cooling superconducting magnets. Phase I will fabricate prototype sealed cable-in-conduit samples, conduct superconducting and stability measurements, and develop theoretical models for the performance of sealed cable-in-conduit superconductors. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Sealed cable-in-conduit superconductors should be particularly useful for pulsed magnetic field applications including fusion reactors and superconducting magnetic energy storage
