Research abstract

65027 Although a reasonably priced copper-stabilized Nb3Sn superconductor with small continuous individual filaments would benefit high energy physics research, it is not currently available from a US manufacturer. A technique will be developed to produce tubular cored Nb3Sn superconductors using an inexpensive, easily fabricated core material. This design will meet the criteria for a high critical current density, high critical field, low-ac-loss superconductor for use in very large high field magnets. Phase I will develop and demonstrate a commercially viable, inexpensive, dispersion strengthened powder core for use in producing multifilamentary Nb3Sn superconductors. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: Nb3Sn superconductors, produced using novel DSP alloy techniques, should produce a product to meet the requirements for the next generation of magnets currently being designed at Fermilab for the Very Large Hadron Collider and for future generation large magnet applications.
