Research abstract

The goal of this program is to design, build, and test a man-portable UXO detection system. The UXO detector will be based upon nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) technology, a variant of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology that does not require an applied magnetic field and has high chemical specificity. The detector will initially be designed and built to detect RDX-based explosives, but will be upgradeable to TNT-based explosives as the technology evolves. Phase I will consist of a comprehensive engineering design study addressing the issues required to convert present-day, enclosed-volume NQR explosive detectors into a single-sided, man-portable UXO detector. In Phase II, a prototype system will be built and field tested under realistic operating conditions.
