Research abstract
Not Available We propose to develop a novel portable digital lidar (PDL) for detection of bio-agent aerosols by monitoring laser-induced fluorescence and multi-wavelength backscatter. It will utilize digital detection technique, to achieve orders of magnitude improvement in lidar performance over analog detection. Hence a compact lidar with a much smaller laser and receiver will provide superior range and sensitivity compared to a conventional fluorescence lidar. The proposed PDL equipped with a compact low energy, high PRF diode-pumped uv laser and a 14 telescope will be able to detect bio-aerosol fluorescence from 102p/1 at 2km and 104p/1 at 4.5km. Simultaneous measurements made in the visible (532nm) and ir (1.06um) wavelengths will provide long range (>215km) aerosol detection and differentiation. Our innovations will result in a rugged, low power, maintenance-free portable, high performance lidar system that offers above all a ten fold reduction in cost over other candidate systems. In Phase I, lidar system simulation and design will be performed, and a bread-board lidar will be setup and experiments will be carried out to establish the feasibility. In Phase II a prototype aerosol and fluorescence lidar will be fabricated and stand-off detection and discrimination will be demonstrated with special software developed for analysis.
