Research abstract

We propose to develop miniature voltage and current sensors that are highly optimized for use in the monitoring of wideband signals induced in high-density electronic circuits in harsh environments. The sensors will be capable of measuring signals from at least 300 kHz to 1 GHz with voltage and current amplitudes from 10 V and 10 mA. The probes will incorporate optical fiber links to a data room, with an optical modulator and coupler tightly integrated with the sensor. Identical amplifier and optical systems will be used by both the voltage and the current sensors. These sensors will be characterized by the innovative integration of state-of-the-art electronic and photonic technologies. During Phase I, we will perform laboratory tests of all the critical components and concepts, model the complete system, and finalize a design that will be built and field tested during Phase II.
