Research abstract

THE PROJECT IS DEVELOPING A MICROMECHANICAL CONSTITUTIVE DAMAGE (MCD) MODEL FOR USE WITH METAL-MATRIX COMPOSITES. THE MODEL INCORPORATES TRADITIONAL PARAMETERS SUCH AS AN ELASTICVISCOPLASTIC MATRIX, FIBER-MATRIX DEBONDING, RESIDUAL STRESSES, AND FIBER PACKING GEOMETRY. THE MCD MODEL INCORPORATES CONTINUUM MODELS OF FRACTURE AND FATIGUE AT THE LOCAL FIBER-MATRIX LEVEL. THE MODEL INCREASES UNDERSTANDING OF HOW CRACKS AT THIS LEVEL PROPAGATE AND WHAT MATERIAL PARAMETERS ARE HELPFUL IN CONTROLLING FATIGUE CRACK GROWTH. TOOLS ARE BEING GENERATED TO INCORPORATE COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT) DATA INTO THE MODEL. CT PRVIDES DETAILED INFORMATION OF MICROMECHANICAL GEOMETRIC PARAMETERS SUCH AS FIBER DISTRIBUTION AND CRACK SIZE AND LOCATION.
