Research abstract

65575 A tremendous quantity of fossil fuels are consumed each year to heat and cool the country¿s commercial and residential buildings. The use of a renewable energy source, such as solar energy, could avoid both the economic and environmental penalties from high fossil fuel use. However, past attempts at developing an economically attractive solar cooling system have failed because the cooling technology was too expensive and inefficient. This project will incorporate liquid desiccants ¿ materials that have a strong affinity for water vapor ¿ in a solar heating/cooling system that will compete with conventional technology. Phase I will use computer models to identify the configuration for a complete liquid desiccant, solar heating/cooling system, and identify technical problems that must be overcome for commercial success. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits: The liquid desiccant, solar heating/cooling system should both reduce the country¿s reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate the environmental damage, including possible climate changes, caused by their use. Also, since desiccants are an effective means of dehumidifying the fresh air supply for buildings, indoor air quality should improve.
