Research abstract

To enable knowledge dominance, a primary goal of the CIPP is to consolidate multiple inputs from diverse planning tools and real-time data feeds and provide a real-time, at the edge, automated planning capability – and to present this information to the operator in an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI). This is an ambitious goal that has not been achieved today. Currently, disparate tools, an acute lack of data, manual liaisons, Excel Spreadsheets, and Power Point Charts acutely limit the display of real-time predictive battlespace awareness information. To further complicate the planning and re-planning process, the voluminous dynamic real-time data for both BLUE and THREAT forces are not available in a machine-readable format, and when they are available, the sheer volume quickly overwhelms the human operator.    However, if this goal of AI-assisted IAMD planning can be accomplished, the intuitiveness of the GUI will have been the key to providing “TRUST” in the AI system by presenting a “revolutionary information view” to the operator.  This breakthrough will be on par with having Google Maps® and automated route planning when you arrive in a strange city.  Just as start and endpoints are key in Google route planning, the most critical parts of an information view are the estimates of the enemy’s current location and intent over time. In other words, what are the most dangerous and most likely threat reactions to the BLUE mission over the mission time horizon? To this end, the key questions in using the AI system GUI are: “How will we accomplish the mission?”, “What are the key events that will allow the Commander to seize and maintain the initiative?”, and “What are the qualitative and quantitative metrics (both sequential and cumulative) that assess the efficacy of this Course of Action?” Within the LG-RAID 4D/5D GUI, 4-D and 5-D representations emerge when 2-D and 3-D spatial representations are combined with two additional dimensions: (1) temporal (4D representing time-based battlespace dynamics) and (2) actionable information (5D representing an enhanced Information State I(S)). It is the I(S) that contains exploitable information such as dynamic threat actions and counteractions, distributed sensor and weapon coverage, and the quantitative assessment of mission factors, including inventory status, decision and reaction times that allows the commander to provide continuity and direction to the operation. Over the past three years, in dozens of end user and Flag Officer demonstrations, LG-RAID has been shown to provide the most complete user interface (i.e., the most relevant Information States I(S)). LG-RAID is a leading contributor to enable the CIPP to reach its goal of creating a consolidated IAMD planning system that provides knowledge dominance to maintain control of the sea in the complex battlespace of the future.
