Research abstract

1Hull-mounted sonar sensors are subjected to a number of shipborne noise phenomena due to coupling through their mechanical mounts. Such noise is complex, composed primarily of engine noise, wave induced hull vibrations, and other hydrodynamic pressure-induced noise due to propeller cavitation and flow. The proposed project will developadaptive nonlinear polynomial neural network noise prediction and cancellation algorithms to suppress shipborne noise in hull-mounted sonar sensors electronically via active noise suppression technies. The nonlinear processing will significantly improve prediction of shipborne acoustic sensor noise, and thus provide enhanced performace of the noise suppression, because it will not be limited to narrowband Gaussion interferers as are linear algorithms.
