Research abstract

The fleet introduction of advanced multibeam sensors as well as an increased acoustic channel capacity are expected to create an operator workload on the P3 UIII and other Airborne ASW platforms. If the increased number of sensor channels are presented as additional pages to the existing acoustic displays, the operator will be quickly overwhelmed. It is clear that the emphasis of the system must change from 'acoustic channels' to-'acoustic target sources' at least in the initial search phase. A new and innovative data fusion technique is proposed. A high level search display methodology which builds on the current display formats is also proposed. The Phase I product will be a robust data fusion algorithm which can be implemented with minimal cost and risk. In addition, a high level search display which can be integrated with fleet displays will also be designed. The proposed solution is innovative, and is attainable using the state of the art display systems being introduced into fleet systems.
