Research abstract
The U.S. Army has a critical need to protect its expanding Ethernet-based networks deployed around the world. But, as the Government moves quickly to implement commercial protocols and standards for packet-based network-centric solutions for sensitiveinformation distribution, available options to protect this information are insufficient and costly. Designed only to protect data flowing across dedicated point-to-point connections, the Government's legacy cryptographic equipment is inefficiently suitedfor today's Local Area Network (LAN) environments-specifically Ethernet. In Phase I of our research into Low-cost Ethernet Encryption solutions, we analyzed four Ethernet technologies: 10 MBPS Ethernet (802.3); 100 MBPS Fast Ethernet (802.3u); Wireless Ethernet (802.11); and 1000 MBPS Gigabit Ethernet (802.11). Phase Iresulted in a Low-cost Ethernet Encryptor (LCEE) architecture that complements all four technologies. In Phase II, a prototype model will be designed, constructed, and demonstrated. Implementing an innovative approach that maximizes use of standard commercial Ethernet products, the prototype will provide high-grade encryption protection with VirtualPrivate Network (VPN) interoperability. Beyond applications within the Army, low-cost commercial cryptographic Ethernet VPN products could also fulfill a variety of functions, worldwide, in home, business, and government settings.
