Research abstract
Modern computer and communication networks are required to transport increasingly diverse and dynamic data traffic among an increasing number of network nodes. The efficiency with which networks transport data is fundamentally constrained by the efficiency with which it can multiplex the diverse nodal traffic into an efficiently organized stream, and then demultiplex it at the appropriate destination node. Unfortunately, both the growing diversity and dynamic nature of network data traffic severely constrains the efficiency of multiplexing and demultiplexing, and thereby the efficiency of the overall network. SICOM proposes research which exploits an innovative new methodology for decomposing nodal data traffic into components exhibiting both predictable and unpredictable data rates. Combined with previously successful research which developed an optimal efficiency network transport scheme for predictable data, this novel decomposition promises to support significant enhancements in network transport efficiency. Moreover, this innovative multiplexing technique offers an ideal match to the emerging network traffic rising from compressed audio (computer telephony) and video (teleconferencing) network nodes. SICOM has already developed and demonstrated a high-speed CMOS ASIC embodying the transport processing for the predictable component of nodal data traffic. The proposed research will extend this to accommodate completely arbitrary network data characteristics.
