Research abstract
Not Available The use of actuation methods which capitalize on high density energy sources is essential for powering structures such as ambulatory robots, exoskeleton systems, and other machines. Most systems developed to date rely on electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic means for actuation. In such systems the actuator itself may be capable of high energy density, but at the expense of large and cumbersome battery arrays, pumps and or generators. For creating high power systems, a hydrocarbon fuel can be used to directly power an actuator to achieve superior power to weight ratio as compared to other energy sources. Phase 1 of this proposal concentrates on developing (1) concept architecture for direct combustion actuation and (2) testing a critical component of the actuator system.
