Research abstract
Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) proposes to develop and deliver a prototype rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE) that is ready for integration with an experimental flight vehicle. RDREs represent a significant potential improvement in rocket propulsion performance with lower mass and volume than conventional constant pressure engines and the possibility for increased fuel efficiency. However, previous work has been limited to heavyweight engines designed for test stands. A key next step in RDRE development is a flight demonstration. To perform this demonstration, an RDRE assembly designed for use on a flight vehicle is required. Over the course of this program, PSI will design, fabricate, and demonstrate a regeneratively cooled, flightweight RDRE assembly that includes required systems such as an igniter, engine control unit, thrust vector control, and throttle control. The program will conclude with the delivery of two prototype flightweight RDRE assemblies to the Air Force.
