Research abstract

In response to Navy SBIR Phase I solicitation N242-072, titled “Improved Heat Blanket Technology for Aircraft Composite Bonding Operations”, Triton Systems plans to develop a novel, flexible heater blanket capable of heating as far up to the edge as possible without heat sinks or dead spots. The proposed heater blanket is intended to function at I-level repair facilities and with existing composite repair processes for 400oF resin systems.  In the SBIR Phase I, Triton plans to utilize its composites engineering and material expertise to create a robust militarized heater blanket. The heater blanket design is conformable to complex features, can be sized to fit a variety of repairs/parts, and can achieve prescribed thermal cure profiles including high temperature radome window repairs. Triton plans to evaluate the performance of the prototyped heater blanket to meet Navy requirements through a combination of lab scale tests and thermal analysis. The prototype heater blanket design is planned to be produced at the lab scale and used to demonstrate a representative composite repair. The Phase I will conclude with the development of prototyping and testing plans for the Phase II. In the Phase II, a high-temperature hot-bonded repair will be planned at a Navy site to evaluate results and further mature the technology.
