Research abstract

The NextGen team is proposing the advancement of wireless systems technology, leveraging our extensive knowledge and experience in developing miniaturized modular sensory systems. Building upon a legacy of programs focused on wireless sensor technologies spanning 30 years, which resulted in a patented innovation, our goal is to mature this technology and make it suitable for airborne instrumentation network. The implementation of the proposed wireless communication brings forth several challenges, including ensuring the reliable transfer of data and achieving time synchronization among remote nodes. This direct Phase II initiative is dedicated to the application-specific implementation of the technology. It involves hardware and software refinements aimed at reaching Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6. We are committed to addressing data security and airworthiness aspects, making it a robust turnkey solution tailored for Air Force test aircraft. The anticipated outcome of D2P2 is the demonstration and validation of system hardware and embedded software in operational conditions, space, and electromagnetic environments. Following the successful completion, NextGen plans to collaborate with Air Force personnel to conduct in-flight data collection. This process aims to replicate or enhance the wired data collection traditionally performed on aircraft, showcasing the wireless airborne instrumentation network through a piggyback demonstration.
