Research abstract

Creekside Environmental Products Inc. is leading the charge in developing innovative PFAS-free, oil/grease, and water-resistant molded fiber products tailored for food packaging applications, addressing significant challenges within the industry. While lignocellulosic fiber-based packaging materials have emerged as a promising solution to combat plastic waste, their limited water and oil resistance have impeded widespread adoption, particularly in food packaging. Compounding this issue is the prevalent use of PFASs in food packaging, raising concerns about potential health and environmental risks. In response to these challenges, Creekside Environmental Products Inc. has pioneered an innovative method leveraging nanotechnology to enhance the oil/grease and water-resistant properties of lignocellulosic fiber-based tableware containers. Phase I of their research successfully produced water-resistant tableware using 0.002 M Fe3+ or Zr4+ solutions. Further enhancement of oil and grease resistance was achieved through the incorporation of cellulose nanofibers. Two distinct approaches have been developed for producing PFAS-free fiber-based food containers: blending cellulose nanofibers (20 Wt.%) with metal cations-modified pulps and coating (0.6 Wt.%) cellulose nanofibers on pre-formed metal cation-modified packaging paper and tableware. Phase II marks a pivotal step for Creekside Environmental Products LLC as they aim to scale up this technology and commence pilot-scale production of oil/grease and water-resistant molded fiber tableware using the Kiefel Wet Molded Fiber Former (KFT Lab V03). Thorough testing will be conducted to evaluate tableware performance and ensure compliance with industry regulations and market standards. This groundbreaking technology represents a significant advancement in the industry, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plastic and PFAS-based tableware. By effectively addressing critical challenges related to oil and water resistance in molded fiber products, Creekside Environmental Products Inc. aims to promote sustainability and enhance product performance, catering to diverse applications across multiple industries. With a steadfast commitment to further refining and commercializing this technology, Creekside Environmental Products Inc. is dedicated to driving innovation, sustainability, and consumer safety in the food packaging industry. Through continued technological advancement, rigorous regulatory compliance, and a client-centric approach, the company is poised to revolutionize the molded fiber packaging market and pave the way for a more sustainable future.
