Research abstract

The increasing reliance on renewable energy sources underscores the need for resilient power systems capable of operating under harsh grid and weather-related conditions. Current practices employing low voltage power converters and step-up transformers result in grid instability and revenue loss during fault events. To address these challenges, solar converters directly connecting to medium voltage grids with enhanced resilience are essential. Proposed Technology: Our solution proposes a modular, scalable multi-port converter with a withstand voltage rating of 2X, eliminating the need for step-up transformers and output filters. This converter, housed in a weatherproof enclosure, withstands extreme weather conditions and provides reactive fault current during short circuits to prevent voltage dips. Additionally, it integrates efficient energy storage, improving system efficiency and reducing costs compared to traditional setups. In Phase I, we developed control algorithms, optimized highfrequency transformers, and conducted feasibility studies. Phase II saw the development of hardware and software for standards compliance, along with the construction of a 1.2MW prototype and validation testing. Phase IIB Objectives: In Phase IIB, we focus on critical activities to advance our technology further. This includes Software Non-Regression Testing, the development of a Testing Platform for Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT), and Testing and Verification of Power Converter Performance against IEEE standards. These efforts aim to enhance reliability, performance, and market readiness. Phase III Plans: Phase III involves deploying a pilot in the field to validate performance in real-world conditions. Successful implementation will reduce solar energy production costs and facilitate high penetration of solar energy into the grid.
