CalWave xNode

The xNode is a small-scale wave energy converter (WEC) designed for providing off grid renewable power at a level not currently possible with existing persistent systems. End use cases that the xNode powers include sensors onboard the WEC, sensors located at the seabed, and for charging underwater vehicles. Existing solutions include solar buoys (5-50W), cables ($30k per km to install), and batteries, fuel cells, and diesel generators which all must be recharged or refueled for longer term deployments. The xNode architecture is a single point mooring, point absorber WEC which can produce power in a floating or submerged configuration. This controllable submergence depth capability allows for modulating the power generation in different sea states, increased survivability due to submergence during large storm sea states, as well as enabling new innovative mission profiles like submerged operation to prevent detection. Another innovative feature of the xNode is its inflatable outer hull, which attaches to the rigid inner core that houses the power take-off, energy storage, and sensing equipment. This inflatable hull is deflated for transport and deployment, and inflated once the system is in the water.
