Research abstract

Problem Statement: The recovery of low-level heat in the U.S. is often economically unfeasible, resulting in an estimated annual fuel waste of $200 billion across buildings, manufacturing, and power sectors. The inefficiency of traditional metallic heat exchangers exacerbates this issue, undermining U.S. economic growth and contributing to increased greenhouse gas emissions. P-HEX Provides a Solution: T2M Global and Trevi Systems are collaborating to introduce cost-effective, high-efficiency P-HEX technology. Capable of ultra-high heat transfer rates, P-HEX is poised to make substantial strides in harnessing low-level heat, enhancing energy savings, and fostering air quality improvements, particularly in disadvantaged communities. Scope of Work Under Phase IIA: The proposed Phase IIA aims to further refine the fabrication process to ensure the reproducibility of P-HEX performance. The focus will be on optimizing the extrusion process for producing thin-walled polymer tubes and gathering accurate and repeatable test data to enhance modeling efforts. The anticipated developments are expected to enable the production of market responsive P-HEX units with consistent quality and durable seals, paving the way for the commercialization of this technology in diverse sectors aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Beneficial Impacts of P-HEX Technology: Ľ Up to 20% Reduction in Fuel Use: The P-HEX technology would reduce energy consumption in diverse areas across the buildings, manufacturing, and power sectors by up to 50 billion therms per year. Ľ $50 Billion Fuel Savings to Private and Public Sectors: Heat recovery with P-HEX translates into annual savings of $50 billion at $10/MMBTU Natural Gas, leading to increased profit margins in manufacturing, enhanced U.S. competitiveness, and improved quality of life in residential sectors. Ľ Reduced GHG Emissions: A low-hanging fruit to reduce GHG emissions by up to 20% in multiple sectors, leading to improved air quality in disadvantaged communities. Ľ Cost-effective Carbon Capture: The recovery of low-level waste heat using P-HEX in a Carbon capture plant will reduce operating costs by up to 20%, making them commercially viable in the near-term, thus accelerating decarbonization. Ľ Improved Indoor Air Quality: Offering a cost-effective solution to Sick Building Syndrome, PHEX can enable HVAC systems to meet ventilation standards while reducing operational costs and minimizing the build-up of pathogens, including bacteria and viruses. Ľ Job Creation in Disadvantaged Communities: At full-scale deployment, P-HEX is anticipated to create over 50,000 domestic jobs in manufacturing, installation, service, and the associated ripple effects.
