Research abstract

Future electromagnetic warfare and communication systems demand multifunctionality and rapid reconfigurability across the electromagnetic spectrum. This necessity arises from the concurrent challenges posed by wideband jamming, narrowband directed energy attacks, and unwanted co-site interference. The proposed Hybrid Meta-radome, featuring functionalized electromagnetic layers, offer a solution by enabling unprecedented spectrum tailoring of existing RF antenna systems. This radome integrates freeform metasurface layers with gradient index (GRIN) materials, provides precise control over the system transmission pass band and polarization, controls radar cross-section (RCS) levels, enhances bandwidths and adaptability to dynamic RF operational requirements. By incorporating time-varying metamaterials, non-reciprocal transmission capabilities are realized, enabling transmission while simultaneously rejecting jamming or interference within the same band. The hybrid meta-radomes present a promising avenue for electromagnetic and structural protection of advanced communication and radar systems, ensuring resilience and effectiveness in the face of evolving threats and operational requirements.
