Research abstract

Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM) enhances naval capabilities by providing the capability to carry most shipboard parts in a single package.  MAM capability means more operational systems, less parts in shipboard inventory, and on-demand repair.  This enhances the warfighter readiness through higher operational reliability and decreased downtime, and increases shipboard capacity for warfighting additions.  The proposed effort attempts to attack the fundamental problem of Ar utilization levels in the elimination of melt oxidation in the Directed Energy Deposition (DED) process.  This will be performed through both selective capture, and system optimization.  The focus in doing so is first on the MAM system that will be installed for the Navy:  the ADDiTEC wire-DED system.
