Research abstract

We will create a prototype mechanical detection system that is calibrated to notify yard operators when a tankcar is subjected to a high energy coupling event. The feasibility of the system to work in representative environmental and service conditions without operator involvement for a minimum service life will be demonstrated. Scaled physical testing will be conducted to verify that the detection system notification threshold is accurate and can be calibrated to a desired input. We will develop a plan for initial low-volume production and distribution to tank car owners.
