Research abstract

We are developing a solution for protection of fixed airbases against small UAS threats. The solution consists of one or more autonomous protective UAVs featuring thermal and visible threat detection, automatic target classification and prioritization, and engagement using an on-board air-burst 458 Caliber airburst round triggered by an embedded RF proximity fuze. The protection UAV features a single-mission flight time of 16 hours, carries 65 rounds for an effective kill distance of up to 1 mile in an air-to-air engagement and a 2 mile range for detection and classification, while flying at 87 knots. The airframe and propulsion system implement a hybrid combination of traditional winged airplanes and quadcopters, allowing for VTOL as well as flying while firing in any arbitrary attitude and flight direction. This capability allows for a large engagement envelope of a large variety of threat speeds, maneuverability, and evolving attack tactics.
