Research abstract

As the number and capabilities of known and unknown space systems are expanding, the United States Space Force (USSF) needs to enhance and modernize space domain awareness (SDA). However, there are significant challenges to identify, track, and characterize modern CubeSats that are deployed to orbit in groups of five or more. Also, the capabilities of larger unknown systems are not easily characterized based on raw data from the Space Surveillance Network (SSN). Creare’s novel SAT3D software generates high resolution 3-D models of space systems to accurately identify them, rapidly detect them, and characterize their capabilities. Our system works robustly with image artifacts and sensor models relevant to known and unknown on-orbit space systems. Moreover, instead of producing discrete point cloud or triangulated mesh models, SAT3D generates parametric CAD geometries by leveraging existing Creare software. We draw from our long history of 3-D object reconstruction algorithms and hardware devices, leveraging past and ongoing government investments to meet this critical USSF need. Creare has a long history developing, transitioning, and deploying software for military applications in cyber-secure environments. In Phase II, we will develop prototype SAT3D software for evaluation by the USSF.
