Research abstract

In response to Navy SBIR Phase I solicitation N241-045, titled “Composite Launch Tube (LT) for the Compact Rapid Attack Weapons (CRAW)”, Triton systems plans to develop a 6.75-inch diameter composite launch tube that maintains the existing form, fit, and function as the current stainless steel launch tube for the CRAW. Triton’s approach addresses propulsion performance concerns, complies with current Navy safety, performance, and operational requirements, reduces life cycle costs, reduces weight, and improves reusability of the LT. In the SBIR Phase I, Triton plans to utilize its composite design expertise to complete a robust conceptual design for the composite launch tube. This design and analysis plans to include the evaluation of all relevant load conditions defined in the RFP and by the Navy; such as shock requirements, launch and reaction forces, and the internal pressure from the gas generator. In parallel to the design, Triton plans to evaluate the manufacturability of the laminate, the incorporation of machined features, and assess tooling/manufacturing methods in preparation for the Phase II. In the Phase I option, design revisions will be performed as needed to address additional Navy requirements defined. In Phase II, Triton plans to produce and deliver a prototype of the modified Phase I conceptual design to meet the initial design specifications/capabilities and requirements. The prototype will be evaluated to meet the LT requirements, its ability to meet or exceed existing LT performance, and maintain drop in compatibility with the existing CRAW Launcher Assembly.
