Research abstract

Corvid Technologies proposes to develop a directed energy (DE) weapon effects module within its Velodyne Integrated Tool for Assessment of Lethality (VITAL) software package to perform lethality assessments between DE weapons and hypersonic targets. VITAL is a Monte Carlo generation tool that contains multiple weapon effects module (blast, fire, debris, etc.) with the ability to perform system-level and component-level probability of kill analysis and engagement optimization. The DE weapon effects module will comprise three submodules that resolve atmospheric effects, boundary layer effects, and target vulnerability assessment. Corvid will develop machine learning and artificial intelligence models to power these submodules and train them using data gleaned from high fidelity modeling and simulation. To generate this data, Corvid will leverage its multi-physics solver Velodyne, which features advanced modeling capabilities for DE loading and the material response (e.g., melting, vaporization, and ablation). Corvid will also organize a comprehensive verification and validation plan to establish confidence in the DE weapon effects module and its critical subcomponents. By the end of this effort, Corvid will have developed the capabilities within VITAL to perform a fast-running DE lethality assessment against hypersonic threats.
