Research abstract

Hemorrhage is the leading cause of preventable combat mortality. Despite recent advances in care, sustaining adequate tissue perfusion remains a challenge. Diagnostics currently used to guide battlefield resuscitation and transfusion often lag symptomatic diagnosis or misdiagnose the severity of volume derangement. Care is further complicated by the risks of under- and over-resuscitation, high patient heterogeneity, and scarcity of resources, especially during prolonged field care, multi-domain operations, and unique U.S. Air Force missions requiring enroute care. Thus, precise guidance fluid resuscitation and blood transfusion remain urgent unmet needs. Blood volume analysis (BVA) provided by Daxor’s FDA-cleared BVA-100 device is the gold standard for assessing total blood volume, red blood cell volume, and plasma volume. Extensive peer-reviewed medical literature has validated BVA’s enhancement of interventions through rapid, reliable, and accurate blood volume quantification. Here, we propose to develop the Fluorescent BVA-200 (BVA-200F), a non-nuclear, ruggedized, portable, and forward-deployable version of the commercially available BVA-100. The proposed BVA-200F will be a uniquely accurate, combat-deployable decision assist capability for diagnosis and treatment of hemorrhage.
