Research abstract
Ensuring the operational efficiency of Space Operations Command (SpOC) facilities and equipment is crucial for the mission success of the U.S. Space Force. Operational delays due to malfunctions in building systems or electrical hardware results in the loss of precious time, resources, and manpower. Building systems operating at maximum capacity pose a risk to vital mission systems. This presents a complex challenge to prevent any adverse impact on SpOC assets. Similar challenges have been documented at other critical buildings and infrastructure such as hospitals, airports, and industrial facilities. TwinKnowledge proposes to provide its technology platform to develop interactive Cognitive Digital Twin (CDT) for SpOC, specifically designed to enhance asset management and optimization. The focus will be on performance modeling of major building systems and assets including cooling, power, and HVAC, which are vital for maintaining operational integrity and efficiency in space-related activities. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models on the TwinKnowledge platform will deliver a dynamic, interactive twin of the physical infrastructure, allowing for comprehensive facility space planning, what-if scenario analyses for load and resiliency, and real-time monitoring of critical system nodes. TwinKnowledge has been advised by Prof. David Gerber from University of Southern California on the development of CDT technology, which serves as basis for smart maintenance protocols, system failure identification and recommendation engine for preventative actions. This proactive approach to maintenance not only ensures the continuous operation of critical systems but also significantly reduces downtime and associated costs. The goal of Phase I is to demonstrate the feasibility of the TwinKnowledge CDT at SpOC. This includes identification of building assets and systems, definition of user personas, prioritization of use cases, and development of technical solution architecture. Additionally, the team will propose sensors and AI predictive models for the identified equipment, systems, and spaces, which are compliant with DoD requirements. The TwinKnowledge platform can be deployed during Phase II in AWS GovCloud (US) to host sensitive data and regulated workloads that address the most stringent U.S. government security and compliance standards. It provides the flexibility to architect a secure cloud solution that address DoD requirements. This initiative not only represents a significant technological leap forward for military space operations but also sets a new standard for the integration of digital twins in national defense strategies, offering a replicable model for other branches and units within the DoD. Through the implementation of this cognitive digital twin, the Space Force will achieve unprecedented levels of operational insight and control, ensuring the highest levels of preparedness and strategic advantage in the space domain.???????
