Research abstract

In this SBIR project we present an important solution for the avionics industry, addressing the critical need for increased data bandwidth and resilience in harsh environments. We introduce a high-capacity, short wavelength division multiplexing (SWDM)-based optical backplane, leveraging an advanced silica-based planar lightwave circuit (PLC) technology. The proposed system aims to overcome the limitations of both traditional copper-based interconnects and single wavelength optical networks by utilizing four wavelengths (850, 880, 910, and 940 nm) to significantly boost bandwidth and ensure robust, low-latency data transmission. At the core of this concept is the implementation of athermal arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) within a silica-based PLC platform, chosen for its low temperature sensitivity and chemical stability, crucial for reliability in avionic environments. The integration strategy ensures scalability and performance in demanding conditions, with detailed plans for integrating vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and photodiodes (PDs) into the PLC, ensuring alignment-tolerant, efficient coupling to both these components and multimode fiber and compliance with industry standards like OpenVPX and SOSA™. The project will begin with the design and fabrication of the optical layer, progressing through integration and characterization of the components, and culminating in a comprehensive plan for Phase II. Omega Optics’ expertise in integrated photonics and the availability of a substantial fabrication and test infrastructure at the University of Texas at Austin positions this project to succeed in advancing avionic data communication, promising a transformative impact on the industry's bandwidth capabilities and operational efficiency.
