Research abstract

High Temperature, High Efficiency Electrical Starter/Generator (ES/G): Increasing mission system power and heat loads are pushing vehicle system capabilities to the edge. As such improved size, weight, performance, and thermal characteristics are necessary to grow existing fighter platforms and minimize future platform size. The LaunchPoint (LP) 100% air-cooled oilless permanent magnet generator (PMG) offers > 4.0 kW/kg specific power while also eliminating the heavy, costly, and complex oil-cooling thermal management systems that conventional aerospace PMGs require. ES/G design incorporates patented design embodiments that include key features to mitigate some common failure modes associated with PMGs. Those patented/patent pending design embodiments include Phase Fault Isolation, Turn Fault Isolation, and Magnet Array Retention. The LP ES/G can be paired with a matching “co-designed” LP ICC to unlock the maximum benefits of our groundbreaking ES/G design. The result is an optimized system that offers remarkable Size, Weight, and Power benefits, while enabling safe and reliable adoption of PMGs in both military and civilian aircraft.
