Research abstract
This project addresses the critical need for more energy-efficient lighting solutions in U.S. commercial buildings. The existing solutions have not fully capitalized on the potential of LED technology for energy savings and performance due to limitations in material efficiency and light distribution. The proposed project seeks to develop ultra-high performance LED lighting sheets that utilize photoluminescent light guides, a concept designed to substantially surpass the efficiency and performance of current LED and fluorescent lighting options. By leveraging advancements in LED technology, optics, and nanophotonics, the project aims to establish a new benchmark in lighting design, offering a blend of material efficiency, luminous efficacy, and aesthetic appeal not achievable with existing solutions. In Phase I, the focus will be on demonstrating the feasibility of using photoluminescent light guides and advanced optical coupling to improve the performance of LED lighting panels. This includes identifying suitable luminescent materials, developing a cost-effective technique for incorporating these materials into the light guides, and prototyping a lighting panel that demonstrates a significant increase in luminous efficacy. The outcome will serve as a foundation for an expanded effort in Phase II to optimize the technology for commercial production. If successfully developed and adopted, this technology could dramatically reduce energy consumption in the commercial sector, leading to significant savings on electricity bills and a considerable reduction in carbon emissions. Additionally, the unique thin-sheet form factor and enhanced aesthetic qualities of the lighting panels could open up new design possibilities, contributing to more pleasant and productive indoor environments. Beyond energy savings, this project aligns with national goals of advancing sustainable and innovative technologies, potentially positioning the U.S. as a leader in next-generation lighting solutions.
