Research abstract

This project proposes a strategic solution to overcome the challenge of early-stage wave energy commercialization. Dehlsen Associates, LLC (DA) aims to co-develop our Centipod wave energy converter (WEC) alongside our sister company, SeaWellĺs, floating modular desalination system, a promising technology within the blue economy. This synergistic, microgrid-based approach offers several advantages: Ľ Near-term market for Centipod: By integrating wave energy with desalination, we create a lucrative near-term market for Centipod, allowing it to bridge the gap between initial development and widespread commercialization. Desalination, with its established market and high cost-of-water, provides a steppingstone for wave energy technology to gain traction. Ľ Improved power supply flexibility and reduced grid dependence for SeaWell: The desalination system will benefit by integrating power from wave energy to offset retail energy costs, and for remote applications, to enable renewable, microgrid-based water supply. This not only expands range of locations where SeaWell may be deployed to reduce water stress, but also enhances its resilience with microgrid energy supply. This project aligns well with the Co-Development of Marine Energy Technologies (CMET) subtopic's core objectives. We propose to co-develop a marine energy solution (Centipod) specifically designed to address the needs of a blue economy end-user (SeaWell). This fosters innovation within the blue economy and directly contributes to advancing near-term marine energy opportunities. By demonstrating the practical application and economic feasibility of this technology pairing, we pave the way for wider adoption of wave energy and a more diversified and sustainable energy future.
