Research abstract

Due to lack of integration of sensing and control capabilities of the power conversion system controller, batery management system, and energy management system; a standardized platform is need to marrying the functionality of battery safety with the converter that interfaces to the utility grid. Furthermore, o?-the-shelf battery management systems lack the necessary sensors for accurately monitoring state-of-health and state-of-charge of current state-of-the-art battery technology or future battery technologies. Thus, a highly ?exible battery management platform with a universal sensor interface is required that is scalable, future technology ready, lower cost, and smaller in footprint then traditional grid-tied designs. The proposed research and development will meet the challenge of combining the major components of the battery storage system into a uni?ed and standardize platform by architecting a novel chemistry and capacity agnostic autonomous battery management system with cutting-edge sensing technology. The standardized platform will allow easy augmentation of the system to include future battery technology and additional sensors that increased safety and more accurate health monitoring. A new advanced sensor interface will accommodate a plethora of sensors. Phase I will explore the in-situ cell impedance monitoring inherent in the proposed power path controller architecture as well as ultrasonic and cell pressure health sensing and monitoring technology. Phase II of the proposed research will validate the analysis and design of Phase I with a full-?edged, grid-connected, battery energy storage system prototype using the new standardized platform, demonstrating the fully autonomous, chemistry agnostic, capacity agnostic, and technology agonistic operation. Any standardization for products helps industry ensure safety, consistent quality, and compatibility. This reduces overall cost for the product as well as the integration cost for larger systems. The proposed research and development of a novel battery management system not only focuses on standardizing the battery energy storage system platform but also strives to drastically improve the life cycle of the batteries. Extended battery life cycle promotes less environmental waste and harm and reduces energy costs. A power path controller allows reduction in required capacity decreasing the overall footprint. Summary for Members of Congress The next generation battery energy storage systems for power grid stabilization lack a uni?ed standardized platform, hindering deployment, preventing augmentation of future technology, and risking safety and battery longevity. This proposal will tackle these challenges by presenting a novel architecture that standardizes the operation and interface within battery energy storage system, providing autonomous real-time operation, battery chemistry ?exibility, future technology integration, and improved battery life cycle. Extended battery life cycle promotes less environmental waste and harm and reduces energy costs.
